We have had an active Quality Deer Management program since 2008 to improve the habitat and food sources for the deer here, providing our hunters with the opportunity to harvest some of the best bucks since the Reed's purchased the property back in 1934.
Over 6,500 acres of private lands, a mixture of open & deep woods, deciduous & conifer trees, along with interspersed meadows, lakes, marshes and bogs. Reed Ranch is surrounded on three sides by other large tracts of forested lands, the Huron National forest, another similarly sized private hunt club, and a heavily wooded christian camp,
All deer and bird hunters are required to lodge in one of our buildings. Although members of each hunting group change over time, the groups have been active for decades, allowing for wonderful camaraderie and enduring friendships. Tom Proctor, our hunting coordinator, will help fit you into a group that you'll be comfortable with.
For firearm hunting, we have many permanent blinds located at strategic spots across the property in known whitetail haunts. Being private allows us to limit the number of hunters on the property, so that you're not competing with another hunter only 100 yards away, and improving the safety of your hunt.
Each lodge has its own designated stands assigned for the members of that group to choose from and are distributed across the property.
For everyone's safety and to prevent guests from wandering into each others hunting areas, and ruining another guests hunt, we only allow stationary hunting for large game.
When available, one of our staff can help guests with tracking, retrieval and field dressing, if desired or needed. They will get it back to the shop for a final clean up, weighing, and measuring before hanging at the lodge if temperatures allow, or taking it in to the the DNR station for aging and testing if you wish.
The Michigan DNR has successful hunter patches for those that bring their deer in for registration. There are local meat processors to choose from if you wish.
Bow hunting guests can place blinds and tree stands most anywhere during the October archery season, just check in with the manager.
Hunting dogs may only be used for hunting birds during bird hunting seasons at Reed Ranch.
Bird hunting is by special permission, please contact us for details.
Our Deer Committee consists of a great group of long time hunting guests elected by their respective hunt groups who are dedicated to setting the parameters for our QDM
Our Committee meets with the family and management once a year in November to discuss goals for the following year and evaluate results of the past year's deer surveys and hunting successes .in order to set upcoming doe availability. Things taken into account are condition of deer after winter, birth rates, loss due to illness such as influenza in Spring, acorn harvest and predation from coyote black bear, mountain lion and bobcat.
We have limited access to game bird hunting on our property and has allowed our small group of dedicated bird hunters who self-regulate and manage this very limited resource. as the resident population of birds fluctuates, Our hunters coordinate with each other to help prevent over hunting this delicate ecosystem.
Some of the local wildlife include
Harry Smith's 200 lb 10pt
Please use this form to indicate which hunts you are interested in. Click the check box at the bottom if you wish to receive a hunting reservation packet each year.
We love our guests, so feel free to give us a jingle and chat about the details. Carla can explain how our system works and put you in touch with Tom Proctor to discuss seasonal hunting opportunities.
